How wide is a volcanic danger zone?

This can depend on a number of factors, such as the size and shape of the volcano, the shape of the landscape, the nature of the lava, etc.

If the volcano is on an island, it is most likely to be a shield volcano, with a lava flow which is slow moving, and easy to outrun, so the danger zone is small.

Areas with more explosive composite volcanoes and thicker lava have huge danger zones of many km, because the steep flanks of the volcano allow the pyroclastic flows to build up velocity and travel further distances.

The ash is the biggest issue, the UK faced airline shutdown when an icelandic volcano eurpted in 2010, which still classes as a danger zone.
