First thought to be a conservative, Justice Souter, who was confirmed by the Senate in during the George H. W. Bush administration in 1990, gradually shifted to the left. Souter is known as a strict believer in the Constitution. I think with the new administration in place Obama will push hard for a liberal replacement but it will be hard to replace Souter, who was a true believer in bi-partisan rulings.

What is the danger if Obama picks a liberal to fill the vacancy on the US Supreme Court?

There is none. President Obama will select more liberal justices than President Bush did because their political ideologies differ. In 2009, President Obama appointed Justice Sonia Sotomayor to succeed Justice David Souter, who retired. Souter and Sotomayor are both progressives, so the appointment didn't change the balance of the Court. In 2010, President Obama nominated Elena Kagan to succeed Justice John Paul Stevens, who plans to retire at the end of June. Stevens and Kagan are both progressives, so, again, the appointment doesn't change the ideological balance of the Court. The only real issue is whether Obama has or will nominate someone who can adequately fill the role Justice Stevens played on the Court, which will be a very difficult task.

FDR was unsuccessful in his efforts to "pack" the Supreme Court. He wanted the power to name another justice to the Court for every justice that was 70 years old or turned 70 in the future. Although Congress has the power to change the number of justices on the Court, it did not go along with FDR on this plan.

How does Justice Sonia Sotomayor affect the US?

As the first Latina and only the third female justice on the Court, Sotomayor brings much-needed diversity to the bench. She has more experience both as a District Court (trial) judge and Circuit Court (US Court of Appeals) judge than any other member of the Court. Justice Sotomayor replaced Justice David H. Souter, who retired in June 2009. Both are considered part of the Court's liberal faction, although the American Bar Association characterizes Sotomayor as more of a centrist, so her appointment doesn't really change the balance of the Court. We have yet to see what impact her opinions will have on the Supreme Court, and the United States as a whole, as she won't begin sitting en banc until the 2009-2010 Term begins, the first Monday in October.

Why does a judge who shares a president's views when first appointed may rule differently on cases later?

The role of a Supreme Court justice is to interpret the constitution, not make (or change) law or impose one's personal preferences or views. Therefore, upon examination of the constitution as it relates to a particular case, a justice may conclude that a previously held view is not constitutional. This is, of course, in an ideal system. Supreme Court justices are human.
