Unfortunately, Christmas has become commercialized - it's now all about giving and receiving material things. The true spirit of Christmas is in it's meaning - the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ and the celebration of why he was born. If persons put this meaning above all the material gift giving and receiving, I don't think Christmas will ever change.
It shouldn't cahnge at all, because Christmas isn't about receiving or giving gifts, Its about the BIRTH OF JESUS.

There is no 'should' in the number of gifts received or given. Christmas for christians is not about gifts and presents. Or at least it should not be. Other religions do not recognise Christmas so would not receive any gifts.

In the "12 Days of Christmas" song, the cumulative total of gifts given over the 12 days is 364. However, if we consider a hypothetical "25 Days of Christmas," where gifts are given in the same cumulative style as the song, you would sum the gifts given each day from 1 to 25. This would result in a total of 325 gifts given over the 25 days.
