Confucianism was born at a time of absolute violence and barbarism on behalf of many warring princes and kings in China, so I doubt at the time it was founded it wouldn't have been anything abnormal. But modern day Confusionist may be revolted

It can be either one, depending on your meaning. You would "respond to" a question or comment directed at you. You would "respond for" someone else who cannot respond for themselves.
Confucians are focused on ethics and honorable behavior. The daily life of a Confucianist would likely consist of fulfilling all responsibilities in relation to occupation, education and family.
You can respond with a simple "Thank you for your sympathy" or "I appreciate your concern."
