that depends on how many people are attacking. now, if you had a lot of well-trained knights fighting for you, then maybe not. but if the gates got broken down and you were invaded, everyone probably would fight, including the cook.

As far as I know, to be a chef there arent any steps. To be a chef, you only have to cook for a living. I went looking for the same answer. I cook for a living, but never considered myself a chef. But no training or whatever makes you a chef. Just cook for a living.

I think what children were doing in medieval castles usually depended on the social status of their parents living in those castles. So a child of a cook was supposed not to play with that of the owner of the castle. But depending of their age; the younger a child is, the more ignorend he is about status of his playmate.
