The biggest benefit of using a ring flash when taking photographs is the fact that it illuminates the subject for multiple angles. This allows it to avoid the extra shadows the off-lighting axis creates.
If someone were to be taking candid upskirt photographs, they would be violating the privacy of another person. They would also be partaking in a type of fetish activity.
A camera would be my first choice.

Easiest solution would be to avoid reflective surfaces. If you are in a controlled area play around with lighting... Also if you can avoid a mounted flash... Your overall question is broad so it is hard to pin point a solution...
Animals do not understand photographs, so the act of taking a picture will not bother a turtle. The flash, however, might startle it. If a bright light suddenly flashed, it would distract you, too! Animal photographs are best done with high-speed film so that you don't need a flash. Animal photographers also use telephoto lenses a lot, so that they can stay far enough away from the animals in order not to startle them.

It is certainly disrespectful to take photos of people at a funeral without asking their permission. If permission is granted, take care not to be obvious about picture-taking (i.e. disable noises from the camera and turn off flash). Otherwise, it is permissible to the extent that it would be permissible to take pictures at any religious funeral. Additionally, since funerals do not take place on Saturdays or other Jewish Holidays, the prohibition on working (which would prevent "taking photographs") is not applicable.
