The future is hard to predict. Currently, chemistry seems to have two directions towards new inventions.
1. SMART MATERIALS. these are substances designed to do a job and have curious properties to help them. For example, some metal alloys have been produced that "remember" their original shape and, when heated, return to that shape. This means they can be used for spectacle frames that don't bend out of shape or dental braces.
2. Nanotechnology. This means producing machines of molecular size that will allow further development in medicine and computerisation. It works because when can now make molecules of quite predictable shape and can react these together in quite predictable ways.
A very simple example is that zinc oxide cream some sportsmen wear to protect their eyes from the glare of the sun. It used to be very white and look like warpaint, but by making the zinc oxide have smaller particles, it is now colourless.
The big future seems to come in the field of Fullerenes, only discovered in the mid 1980s, we can now manipulate the shape of them to produce molecule sized wires, nets, pipes and filters. This will probably allow us to make tiny machines (eg to filter watse from water, remove toxins from blood or decompose dirt in carpets into harmless gases.
