Literature comes from the Latin litterae, or letter, the definition being the art of written works.

Without literature, you would not be able to guarantee you had accurate information, because everything would be passed down verbally, and mistakes could be made through the generations that the story was passed through.

Without literature, you would also not be reading this page, because it's a written work as well.
