After that, coat the entire pan (with the exception of the part that touches the heating element) with lard. Place in oven at 200 degrees for 3 hours. This will open up the metal pores of the cast iron, and allow the lard to seep in. After removing the skillet from the oven, wipe it down with a paper towel to remove all excess lard. Repeat every 6 months or so, to maintain a non stick surface.
