Without a factory ship, a dead whale would last 12 hours before starting to decompose therefore making it uneditable. The people who thought of this were the Norwegians and the British. Reason for longer trips like to Antarctica was to get as much oil they can as whale oil was used in the manufacturing industry unlike today.
