Well I don't think they have to, but I think that it would be a benefit for the team if the coach has had an experience of playing the sport himself.
They would bring all of their talents and they would do the best that they can do on the first day. You just have to remember that you can not mess up
The coach of the team usually have played soccer for a long time, so the coach can share his/her experience with the team. The coach can also teach and refer back to plays and such. If a team were to coach itself, the result would be disastrous-chaos could happen if some or all of the team does not have experience.
