Some of the adjectives used to describe Romeo are lovestruck, heartbroken, handsome, romantic, kind, honest, brave, smart, gentle, loyal, sensitive, and compassionate. He is described as a fighter, lover, and a very good swordsman. Romeo is a man who is looking for love wherever he can find it. In the beginning of Act 1 he thinks he is in love with the beautiful Rosaline but by the end he falls for Juliet, who is even more beautiful, and is actually interested in him. Romeo is more impulsive than many of the other characters and that gets him into trouble throughout the play.

They change from the start of the play to the finish.

The one trait that Romeo displays throughout the whole play, however, is extreme passion. Romeo is ruled by passion in nearly every moment that he appears on stage. At the start of the play it is suggested that Romeo is quite fickle, quickly falling in love with one girl after another. This is somewhat proven when he meets Juliet. When we first see Romeo, he's madly in love with Rolsaline. The moment he meets Juliet, Rosaline is forgotten and Juliet becomes the object of his overwhelming love. While he seems adverse to violence, admonishing his friends when they get into fights with the Capulets, he shows that his intense passion can quickly override his aversion to confrontation when he kills Tybalt and the quite innocent Paris. Romeo frequently shows himself to be noble, respectful, and committed. Ultimately though, his primary quality is emotional instability.

In the balcony scene, in which Romeo hangs around Juliet's window just because she is there, surprises her admitting her love for him, and then engages her in a conversation in which their passion for each other is driven to new heights, there are several adjectives which might apply to him. Passionate, enamoured, soppy, tender-hearted, romantic and poetic certainly. Also, since he is trespassing and risking his life if caught, bold, courageous, careless, incautious, reckless might also apply. And, since he is able to hang around in the bushes without Juliet knowing he is there, he is also secret, silent, invisible and disguised at that point.
