They were very similar. Kennedy more or less continued what Eisenhower had begun. Kennedy escalated matters somewhat, sending in army and air force "advisers" to help train the Vietnamese.

President Eisenhower did not support sending American troops, but President Kennedy did.

It is not clear as to whether President Kennedy favored sending American troops to South Vietnam. Certainly, sending advisors as Kennedy did not mean they would engage in combat missions. Later under President Lyndon Johnson, the entire concept changed. For President Johnson, he saw that "saving" South Vietnam was a step in the US policy of containment. He dramatically increased US involvement in that war.
