"Acceleration" doesn't mean "speeding up". It means the rate at which velocity is changing.

And "velocity" doesn't mean "speed". It means speed and direction.

Acceleration is rate of change of velocity (dv/dt). Since velocity is rate of change of position, acceleration works out to dx/dt^2.
