While I myself am not blind, I believe the best way to describe a color to a blind person would be through touch, taste, or smell. For example, I think that the color purple would taste and smell like Grape Juice.

i did this to my grandpa who turned blind at the age of 13. being in darkness so long, he forgot colors so he asked me to describe them one day and i told him that i didnt know how. he said close your eyes and face the sun... this is how i remember red. then he took an ice cube from his water and told me to close my eyes and hold out my hand. he placed the ice cube in my hand and he said this is how i remember blue. THen he opened the window to the freshly cut grass outside and once again i closed my eyes. A gust of wind flew by and the smell of grass visualized green for me.
there are so many ways to describe a colours you just have to think of what reminds you of it besides the sky is blue. use your other senses because that's what the blind do. =]
