Most nurses would say something like, "The doctor would be the best person to talk to about that." Usually as long as there is some hope, nobody would say that the child is going to die.

If the mother already knows the child will die, then the nurse can talk to her about pain management. Helping the mother spend quiet time with the child is also very important and the nurse can assist with this.

That no one can know for sure one way or the other, but she has to realize that may be the outcome. Hope that is doesn't happen, but be prepared for it if it should.
