Carbon and hydrogen are detected qualitatively by heating a mixture of the given substance with dry copper (II) oxide in a glass tube. The organic substance is oxidize and carbon dioxide and water are formed. The presence of carbon dioxide is indicated by the formation of a white precipitate of calcium carbonate, when the gaseous products are passed through a solution of lime water. The presence of hydrogen is indicated by the formation of droplets of water in the tube.

put a glowing ember to it

the ember dies in CO2 and causes an explosion in hydrogen

Also bubble the gas through limewater (saturated calcium hydroxide solution). Carbon dioxide reacts to form calcium carbonate which turns the liquid cloudy.

Ca(OH)2 (aq) + CO2 (g) → CaCO3 (s) + H2O (l)

If you put a burning splint overtop of a test tube full of hydrogen, it will pop. If you put a burning splint in a test tube with carbon dioxide, it will be extinguished. Also, if you bubble carbon dioxide through limewater (saturated calcium hydroxide solution). Carbon dioxide reacts to form calcium carbonate which turns the liquid cloudy.

Ca(OH)2 (aq) + CO2 (g) → CaCO3 (s) + H2O (l)

The test for hydrogen is the squeaky pop test. You bring a lighted splint to the gas, and a you will hear a squeaky pop sound.

The chemical equation is:

2H2 + O2 ----> 2H2O

hydrogen

Does the hydrogen on methane go when it becomes carbon dioxide?

Methane burns in oxygen and gets oxidised. Carbon is oxidised to carbon dioxide, hydrogen to water.

If you burn hydrogen do you get carbon dioxide?

No. Hydrogen does not contain carbon, so no carbon dioxide is released just water and heat. See related link.

there is no hydrogen in carbon dioxide. since carbon dioxide is CO2 there are 3 carbon and 6 oxygen atoms in three molecules.
