Amethyst Mountain (episode 1 or quest 1) requires you to locate a dispersal wolf of the opposite gender to your wolf. To find your ideal mate, you must visit all three stranger wolf territories, encountering at least one stranger wolf in each before moving on to the next. Once you have encountered one stranger wolf in each of the three territories, a message should pop up reminding you that you're looking for a dispersal wolf of the opposite gender -- this is the trigger that tells the game you've successfully encountered each territory, meeting the stranger wolves in each -- and will now tell the game to have a chance of spawning a dispersal wolf in any of the three territories.

Once you've seen this message, leave the social arena (where you meet stranger wolves) and either go to another territory or return to the social arena you've just vacated (easier if you're not looking to cross the slopes of AM again!). Tip: You can enter social arenas until you see the wolf, at which point stop. If the stranger wolf is not a dispersal wolf, back out of the arena and go forward again. Another wolf will spawn in its place. Repeat until you find a Dispersal wolf of the opposite gender and approach him/her.

To make a dispersal wolf your mate, you must use these interactions in this exact order.

You will now be able to name your mate and complete the game. Move out of the social arena - you cannot save in any social arena. If you're unable to save at all, you've either died during the game or your corpse is unable to despawn. There's no fix for this, so you will need to either start again from the beginning or load your last save. It's useful to save frequently because of this glitch which only affects Amethyst Mountain and has no impact on Slough Creek.
