I always used a wallpaper background on mine. I would go to paint stores and find rolls of reminate wallpaper. It was cheap and I looked for a wallpaper that was neutral coloring and not pre pasted . The pre pasted type cracks when you try to staple it. The advantage to wallpaper is it never fades, and can be left up for a long time. Go to a teacher supply store in your area and get rolls of borders in many colors/prints. Also use the seasons for decorations. The craft stores have fall leaves made a cloth so they can be used year after year. Add student work among the leaves or put up helpful signs for math, history, language. I like timelines and number lines as well. Again, they can stay up all year. Posters are always good that express positive messages or are funny. A poster of your classroom rules is also needed along with consequences.
