Colts and fillies can become sexually mature between 1.5 and 2 years of age, so you should separate your horses when they are 1.5 years of age. Mares can be bred at this age, although it is not advised as the mare is still growing and indeed may not have the knowledge to look after a foal after only being in the world for a couple of years, and only just becoming an adult herself. I would say the minimum age for a mare to breed would be around 4 years of age.
