I figured it out myself. I couldn't see paying the dealer's service area $30.00 to replace a tailight so I bought one at NAPA for $1.49. After opening the hatch, 2 screws are visible on the inner lip of the lens cover. Unscrew these and the casing is slightly loose. I took a wide paint scaper and GENTLY pried the casing away from the body (outwards). There are 2 pins that hold the outer rim of the casing to the metal of the car (opposite of the side containing the screws). Replace the bulb, adjust the wires and then push the casing pins back into the body of the car. Tighten the srews. My greatest fear was to snap a piece of plastic off and not be able to reattach the casing tightly. This did not happen and I am very happy.

Do not try to pop the top off of this box as i did, instead remove the two screws holding it to the body of the vehicle. The box containing the air filter is located beneath the box you just removed. There are two clips holding the cover on the box, undo these and you will see the filter sitting vertically in the box, replace it, put the cover clips back in place and replace the plastic box that was removed first.
