US authorized weapons only; special ops can use whatever the mission calls for. In the Viet War, SEALS & SF, CIA, etc. used SKS/AKs. During the war, the SKS/AK were as good as enemy uniforms; anyone seen with one was shot at. The US public (this includes US servicemen in Vietnam) had never seen an SKS/AK before (with very rare exceptions); consequently, since the weapon was new to US eyes, anyone with one...was a communist (so they were shot at in Vietnam). SF/SEALS/CIA/etc. had to very carefully approach GIs when they possessed those weapons. They also had to keep them at least semi-hidden when walking around US areas (firebases, compounds, large combat bases, etc.) otherwise someone was sure to sound the alarm.

Unlike today, in which the SKS/AKs are common in US households & sporting goods stores, and all over television, magazines, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Egypt, Syria, Israel, etc.
