I'm not a professional, but I see no reason why the father's alcohol consumption would have an effect on the baby. Assuming that the only fluid being transferred between the mother and father is semen, I think it's highly unlikely, given that alcohol is not excreted through semen. No. The mother carries the baby and it's what she ingests (eats or drinks) that would decide how healthy the baby is or isn't. If a mother drank alcohol or was using street drugs this would be transferred to the baby. Drugs cause baby's to go through withdrawal like an adult coming off drugs. There is a genetic factor as to whether that baby will be prone to becoming an alcoholic or not if the genes for alcoholism are high in either family (mother/father). However genes can skip one or more generations.

When talking about Paternity, It works like this: GUILTY UNTILL PROVEN INNOCENT.
The person who got you pregnant wasn't much of a man by deserting you and leaving you to handle the pregnancy and birth alone and that should be enough to at least make you realize you are blessed to know what type of a spineless young man the father of your baby is now instead of later although it is natural for a little while to have a human bond (feelings) for the baby's father. In time and probably after the baby is born and you are busy raising that baby you will soon get over father of your baby.
Absoltely it's a very bad idea ! The alcoholic could be so 'out of it' that they may harm the child without realising it !
People tend to believe that the health of the father plays little part in harm to a fertilized egg. That is not true. If the father is a drug abuser (steroids count) or and alcoholic it can affect the fertilized egg just as genetics can cause a problem. It is important you tell your obstetrician about your concerns.
