The Saint George and the Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci has been used on British Sovereigns since 1817 and was gradually used on other coins. Variations of the design have also been used on various collector/investor coins.
A gold plated 2008 limited edition coin with 6 rubies from the Royal Mint dated 2008 is far from being a regular issue coin. Most collector or investor gold coins issued by the Royal Mint are either 22 carat gold or pure gold.
It is possibly worth a bit more than you paid for it, although the fact that you have kept it untouched in the original packaging will help maintain whatever value it does have.
