My pavilion dv5000 is giving the same error message as yours when I try to install a new XP operating system. I got the laptop used with no hard drive and no recovery disks, so after installing and formatting a replacement hard drive, I bought new XP software, but it won't install! Just to verify that all the hardware is functioning as it should, I got Windows 98 to install properly, and the machine performs perfectly. It just won't allow new XP to be installed. I've come to the conclusion that this problem is due to some diabolical anti piracy technique invented by Microsoft. There must be some code relating to the product key embedded in the CMOS or BIOS that prevents the installation of any copy of XP other than what was originally sold with the machine. So I guess we'll need to try and get the original recovery disk, otherwise I don't know how to get around this problem.
