Look up active directory. But you'll need to know how to set-up, implement and fully understand DNS first. You cant have an active directory without successfully setting up dns on the server beforehand. And look into DHCP too, it will make life alot easier.
Server Operators
To make a server a domain controller, you typically follow two main steps: first, install the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) role on the server using the Server Manager or PowerShell. Next, promote the server to a domain controller by running the Active Directory Domain Services Configuration Wizard, where you'll specify whether to create a new domain in a new forest or add it to an existing domain.
dcpromo is the wizard that is used to promote a server to the role of a domain controller . Follow the steps on the screen and you will be able to create DC
To set up DNS for a child domain, create a delegation record on the parent DNS server for the child DNS server. Create a secondary zone on the child DNS server that transfers the parent zone from the parent DNS server. Note Windows Server 2003 has additional types of zones, such as Stub Zones and forest-level integrated Active Directory zones, that may be a better fit for your environment. Set the child domain controller to point to itself first. As soon as an additional domain controller is available, set the child domain controller to point to this domain controller in the child domain as its secondary.

You have to have server type OS. Almost any server OS can have multi IPs but in different subnets. Try to play with Gateway role in Manage your server.
dns used to find the mail server for a domain?
No.Not if you just want the domain name, with no content of your own (no website/blog/etc.).You can register the domain name without actually using it for anything. Some people collect domain names, some hope to re-sell them, some plan to use them some day for a website or blog, and so on.You can add the DNS (domain name server) info later, if you want to.If/when you want to put some content at your domain name though, you have to provide the DNS information of a hosting company.

Make sure that you have a good router, if you have it's good if you don't, get one (some routers show very poor performance when the number of users is more than 10). Then you have to specify what kind of server you want to have. If it's just a file server you don't need to do something extra. Just connect the server to the router create shared folders and so on. If you want to create a DHCP server you have to turn off the DHCP server inside of the router (if it has any). For a mail server you need some work extra and plus a domain controller. And so on.
domain controller DC a domain controller (DC) is a server that responds to security authentication requests (logging in, checking permissions, etc.) within the Windows Server domain.
