One famous contemporary composer is Peter Schickele, who is the creator of PDQ Bach. His works are extremely witty, and some of them are brilliant. He is well worth a listen. I heard Schickele live at Connecticut College many years ago. He played many of his standards, and at one point his pianist assistant played the piano (flawlessly) in complete darkness. Nice effect, although I have long since forgotten how this tied in with the piece.
He was, for one, an accomplished pianist.
