The main functions of the skin organ is to not let harmful substances(such as bacteria) from getting into the body, and to keep everything inside your body in.
Five of the major functions of the skin are:

  • protection against disease ( it acts as a first defense against disease causing particles, due to the fact most cant get through unopened skin)
  • sensory response (specialized nerve cells sense and relay info to the brain)
  • formation of vitamin D (formed by ultraviolet light in fat molecules in your epidermis)
  • maintaining body temperature ( blood vessels in the skin can help to hold or release heat maintaining a constant temperature)
  • waste exchange (sweat glands in the skin release waste in the sweat)

The skin

The skin forms a protection covering over the body that prevents physical and chemical injury. Glands in the skin secrete fluids that can damage or destroy some bacteria. The skin is also shows water loss from body tissue. Specialized nerve cells in the skin detect and relay information to the brain. Another important function of skin is the formation of vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for good health because it helps your body absorb calcium into your body from food in your digestive tract.
