You can define anelement by the number of its protons and neutrons and itselectron configuration.
This particle is the proton, equal to the atomic number.
The number of protons determines the element.
PROTON

It is usually considered to be neutrons and protons that hold most of an atom's mass, however there is one theoretical subatomic particle that is used to help explain mass, called the higgs boson particle.
The atomic particles that make up an alpha are two protons and two neutrons. The subatomic particles are contained within the neutrons & protons and there are too many to list here, plus I don't know all of them.

This is not something we can explain with classical physics - its a new phenomenon that happens at the subatomic level. It affects everything that happens on a very small scale; for example, an electron, too, has wave and particle characteristics. Briefly, it seems that the wave is not a mechanical wave in the traditional sense, but a probability distribution that tells you what is the probability of finding a particle in a specific region of space. Do some reading - for example on Wikipedia - on "wave-particle duality", for more details.
