To answers simply, not all RAM is equal. Although commonly broken down by categories the like of DDR2, DDR3 etc, it really comes down to processing speeds & write speeds.
Also consider that legacy-type hardware (ie, components for older systems) were not mass-produced to the same extent as contemporary equivalents, meaning that parts, such as RAM, for older machines is still often more expensive than current (often blazingly faster faster) components.
