So long as your ducts function properly the cheapest option is to keep them. In fact installing ducts is a very large portion of the labor costs and you'd probably have to remove the old ones. The one caveat would be if your old ducts weren't properly insulated you'd want to either replace them or fit them with insulation.

It depends on the system you are having installed as well as the existing ductwork. Consideration will be given to the age and condition of the ductwork, whether it is up to code and whether it provides the most efficient and safe delivery of heating and cooling from your new system. In older homes, for example, the ductwork may have been used in conjunction with an oil furnace or a coal burning heating system. That ductwork would best be removed and replace with new, clean, efficient ductwork. Talk to the HVAC contractor for the best advice.

What is an HVAC Engineer?

Normally "HVAC" refers to "Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning". An HVAC engineer designs heating and cooling systems for homes and commercial buildings. He or she uses knowledge of mechanical engineering and refrigeration to design HVAC systems - drawing up blueprints for HVAC installers and general contractors. The HVAC engineer is responsible to design systems that keep building occupants comfortable in all types of climates and seasons. He or she also makes sure the building will be well-ventilated to protect the health of occupants. The HVAC engineer must also work with whoever is designing the building (if it is a new building) or the building manager (if it is an existing building) to design the system to maximize energy efficiency and minimize the operating and maintenance costs.

Why should I consider a new hvac unit?

I believe that a new HVAC system would be better than repairing the old one, because there are newer energy efficient models now available that would reduce utility bills.
