Almost everybody in Catalonia can speak spanish. They're quite close languages and anyone who's been born in Spain (including Catalonia, Aragón, Navarra...) can speak spanish. Some catalonians can't write catalonian without mistakes, tough.

Whereas, if you are 2nd or 3rd generation Italian, your parents were brought up to speak Italian.
