One of the biggest school systems in Texas has placed a wanted ad in a local newspaper recruiting teachers specifically.
The practice, stemmed from grammar school in which young children are taught the letters of the alphabet. "A" is for Apple, "B" is for Boy, etc. Since students wanted an "A" letter grade, they would give their teachers Apples.
You need to ask my daughter, who has just completed her PGCE. She is 24, and has wanted to be a teacher since she was four.
