A horse's first instinct is to run. "Flight before fight." He will try to get away from any scary situation, for instance, if a bee stings him while the horse is tied, he will suck back. If he sees a "scary" rock on a trail ride, he may not run, but he will shy away from it. If there is a threatening animal in his paddock, he will not run up to it and bite and kick, but run.

If a horse is afraid it will most likely do the following:

  • Pin his ears back
  • Stop/Backup
  • Have open and wild eyes
  • Whinny
  • Ignore what you tell them to do
  • Try to run away from what is scaring them
  • etc.

Hope this helps!
personally, i think it depends on the horse. if the horse is somewhat mean or stubborn, or tends to be the "leader" or "alpha" of the group, it will probably pull its ears back and try to defend itself, against whatever theyre afraid of (even if its something stupid) if the horse is generally shy or skittish, it will do just that in those situations: it will freak out, and try to get as far away as possible from the thing that its afraid of.

It will run away, remenber flight or fight. If it can not get away it will fight.
Horses are flight animals, so the first instinct would be to run.

Horses are fight or flight animals. When they're scared they might spook. Then they'll either try to defend themselves and kick and bite, or they'll run away.
