A man that owned 20 or more slaves was exempt from the Confederate Conscription Act of 1862 and therefore did not have to enter the army if he did not want to. This also applied to the overseer of plantations with more than 20 slaves if they held the position prior to April 16, 1862.

McCain (presedential candidate for 2008) had an ancestor named William Alexander McCain who owned a planation and 52 slaves. This has been verified by National Archive records and Census Records of Mississippi in 1860.

Wealth in land was important because it made men richer. The more land a man owned the higher possibility he could be in politics. Also lawyers, planters, and merchants had assembly seats by the amount of the land they owned. Areas also had wealth in the land like Britain or England wanting more settlements to cover land.
