When belt breaks, cam stops turning and pistons continue to move with crank shaft. Some engines the piston hits valves left open in cylinder.
Never heard of a trans being affected by this.
either the timing belt broke or it ran out of oil
An engine can lock up on a number of reasons but mainly due to mechanical failure for example if the Timing belt snaps... etc...
need a special tool to lock in the cams. lock key sits at the twelve o'clock position.
There is no way to lock the crank on this engine. If you are replacing the timing belt, a special tool is available to lock the cams in position
The timing belt for a V6, L series Saturn is behind the the serpentine belt, under the dust cover. To get to it you will need to remove the cover, as well as several components that will limit access to that area. It is recommended that you replace the water pump when you replace the timing belt. When/if the water pump leaks on the timing belt, it can cause early failure of the belt, which will result in destruction of the engine. Camshaft timing is critical when replacing the timing belt and requires the use of a set of specialized tools that lock the camshafts (4) and the crankshaft while you are removing the old timing belt and installing the new one. Since the tool is expensive and somewhat obscure, and since valve timing is so critical, it is recommended that you have an experienced service technician replace the timing belt.
It is on the front of the engine under the timing cover. First step is to remove the front bumber and put the lock carrier in the service position.
This engine (3.0L) is an interference engine so yes, the engine could lock up if the timing belt jumped.
You must first access the timing belt by removing the drive belts and timing cover. Then put the motor on TDC, lock the cams down, remove the tensioner and then the t-belt. Re-install the new belt, new tensioner, remove the locking pin for the tensioner, unlock the cams, and rotated the engine to ensure everything stays lined up.
there is a mark on the bottom puley line this up use the longer bolts from cam belt cover to lock up pump and camshaft
The "L" series Saturns came in two varieties; the 4 cylinder (which used a timing chain), and the V6 which used a timing belt. To replace the timing belt on the V6 you must use the specially designed tool to lock the camshafts and crankshaft in place while you replace the belt. To replace the timing chain on the 4 cylinder, you must remove the front housing. It's easier to just remove the engine.
you first need Volkswagen specific timing belt tools to lock the camshafts and to correctly apply tension to the new belt, the first step is to remove the front bumper cover and steel bumper, best to take car to a Volkswagen shop unless you have the tools and experience
no you need timing tools put a timing pin in the block to lock the crankshaft and use the timing tool to lock the cams
