If in a house or apartment:

Head for the basement. If your house or complex doesn't have one get to the lowest floor and find a small room in the center part of the building without windows. A bathroom and especially a bathtub often provides good shelter.

If in a mobile home or trailer: abandon the mobile home and seek a more substantial structure. Follow the instructions above.

If in a car: abandon the vehicle and seek shelter in a building. If there are no buildings in the area take cover in a ditch. Do NOT seek shelter under a bridge.

If a tornado comes what should you do?

I would assume that when the tornado hits you are going to be in your car as per the category this was posted under. If you are in your car during a tornado, you should find a ditch and lay in in on your stomach away from your car. If you cannot find a ditch it is suggested to get out of your car and lay under the vehichle in such a manner that if the car would roll either direction the car would not roll on top of you and the car would protect you from debris that is carried by the strong winds.

What should you do if a tornado hits your car?

1st: be aware. Don't get caught in a tornado. If you can drive at right angles to it, do so. If you find yourself close to one abandon the vehicle and take cover in a ditch. Do not seek shelter under an overpass.

Should you drive away in a tornado or stay in a house?

Generally you should shelter in place during a tornado as you are more likely to survive if caught in your house than if caught in a car. Evacuating from a tornado is not as simple as it sounds, as the paths of tornadoes can be unpredictable and it is possible to get stuck in traffic since peak tornado activity often coincides with the evening rush hour. That said, if you are in a mobile home when a tornado is coming you should leave it for sturdier shelter.

Where is the safest place to be in a car when a tornado takes place?

You should not be in the car. A car is a dangerous place to be if there is a tornado. If a tornado is coming, dry to get out of its path by driving at a right angle to its motion, or at least as close to one as the roads will allow. If you are unsure of your ability to escape, get out of the car and lie in a ditch or depression.

Is it safe to be in your car in the garage during a tornado?

No. It doesn't take a very strong tornado to pick up or flip a car. If you are in a car and a tornado is coming you should go to the nearest sturdy building or underground shelter. If no shelter is nearby get out of the car and lie in a ditch or depression.

What should you do if a tornado comes and you are not at home?

If you are in a building go to an interior room on the lowest floor and stay away from windows. If you are outside or in a car with no access to shelter take cover in a ditch. Do not attempt to outrun the tornado and do not seek shelter under an overpass.

Should you try outrun a tornado in a truck or a car?

No. It is better to take shelter.
