The short answer is that not everyone holds to your premise that the deity is beyond all knowledge and comprehension. Many believe religious writings and traditions that teach otherwise.
The existence of the question, "Is there a God?" gives the credence for the search. The one thing that drives man to altruism and philanthropism is the presence of an entity greater than himself.
That question is subject to intense debating and intellectual reflection. For those, who believe in a God, do so because they have been brought up to believe in His power, or they claim to have seen a vision of the Almighty. Those who do not believe in God, have perhaps never experienced any super natural occurring or choose to believe in what exhibits itself and is a life form, often characterized by scientific reasoning and know-how. Either way, people have their own views and perspectives which they are not willing to compromise.
