That's really up to you. Many black women (and men) get relaxers. Just be sure you have the time and dedication for it (when your roots grow in, you need to get a touch up).
The damage isn't nearly as bad on a black woman's hair as it would be on a white woman's hair. Your hair is more resilient.
However, I have to say (as a white woman who loves black hair) that I love the natural texture and various "knots" and "dreads" that can be done with black hair when it's not relaxed. But that's my opinion.
Just make sure you know your options and be sure that the person doing the relaxer knows what they're doing!
