What is the role of pastor emeritus?

The title "Pastor Emeritus" usually refers to a pastor who has been involved greatly in a congregation's life. This pastor may have been the one who founded the particular church body, or one who had just retired. Usually a Pastor Emeritus is given the title as an honor and as a way of saying, "well done, now you can rest." In other words, a Pastor Emeritus is not expected to continue his work at the church, but to enjoy retirement. This does not mean that the Pastor Emeritus cannot agree to fill in or assist when needed.

Can Emeritus Deacons vote on the Deacon Board?

Emeritus - (revision September 13, 2005) The Emeritus Deacon category was adopted in 1987 to honor those deacons who have given outstanding, meritorious, and loyal service to the church and to the board of deacons, and who have attained the age of 75 years. The current deacon chairman, the pastor and three of the most recent deacon chairmen nominate Emeritus Deacons. If approved by the board, the nominees are presented tot the church for approval. Emeritus Deacons would not have the right to vote, but Emeritus Deacons would be eligible to serve as a Rotating Board Deacon through the established deacon nominating process and, as such, would be entitled to vote.

This would be entirely up to your congregation and/or supervising clergy. There are definitely places where this is perfectly acceptable and other places where it would be frowned upon.

Does co-pastor automatically become pastor when pastor dies?

Sometimes, but usually the church council decides who will become the next pastor. If the church has no council, then the clergy members of the church will come together and decide which one of them will be pastor.

Can a pastor of a non for profit church ask a member of the church to please move out of town?

WHAT?! No, a pastor of ANY church cannot ask someone to move out of town and any good, Christian pastor would never do that! The only thing a pastor may do is if he feels that a member of a church has committed a bad sin and will not confess, the pastor can have the church vote on it and the person may be asked to leave the church, but NO PASTOR can kick someone out of town and if that is what's happening, than that pastor is not a good, Christian pastor and he should be reported to the head of the district for whatever denomination his church is.
