By all means study them to improve your understanding of how they work (although you should already know how they work), but don't waste any time trying to improve upon them. After all, humans have been performing arithmetic for thousands of years, the only thing that's actually changed in all that time is the notation; the algorithms themselves were already in place long before we ever had computers.
