Compact fluorescent lamps have made a lot of changes in the lighting sector it is also changed from a fluorescent lamp to compact fluorescent lamps but still it is dependent on the ballast Why?

A ballast is an electrical component used with a fluorescent bulb (or mercury vapor lamp or arc lamp) to conduct electricity at each end of the tube. Compact fluorescent light bulbs are dependent on ballast because they use a gas to create light. when the gas is excited by electricity, it emits invisible ultraviolet light that hits the white coating inside the fluorescent bulb. The coating changes the ultraviolet light into light you can see.

On your 4 bulb fluorescent only 2 bulbs come on?

On the older fluorescent fixtures a four bulb fixture required two ballasts. Two lamps for each ballast. If you have changed the tubes and it still does not work, it sounds like one of the ballasts is not working. You might want to consider replacing the ballast with an electronic one. One electronic ballast will operate four tubes. The existing end sockets can be re used but they will have to be rewired. There is a diagram on the ballast label that shows the connections. This will allow you to use T8 lamps which are lower wattage. This will save money to you in the long run.

Can tinted window film be attached safely to fluorescent ceiling light cover to dim light?

Yes, also you could try a lower wattage lamp that will still fit into the same fluorescent fixture.

Will a fluorescent lighting fixture that uses 4 4 ft T8 bulbs operate with only 2 bulbs installed?

The lighting fixture may have 1 ballast, or 2 ballasts. If it has only 1 ballast all 4 lamps must be good in order for it to work properly. It is recommended to replace all lamps at the same time, rather than just the one that is bad. Testing has shown that replacing just one, will shorten the life of the others controlled by that ballast. If 2 ballasts are used, each one is wired to 2 lamps. So, if one pair has a problem the other 2 will still work. To find out how many ballasts you have you must open the fixture. You can't miss them they are the big black rectangular objects.

I've changed the bulbs in a 40 inch fluorescent light fixture but it still goes out. What might be wrong?

It sounds like your ballast is malfunctioning. If it is a magnetic ballast it will probably have tar protruding out of it and the ballast will be very hot. Buy a new electronic ballast. Change the wiring to the end sockets like it is shown on the electronic ballast print that can be found on its label. You will need new tubes for the new ballast. Diameter will be T-8.

Is it normal for fluorescent bulbs to start blinking finally go out with the base of it where the glass meets it is black and melted like it was going to catch fire?

When fluorescent tubes become dark on the end where they join the socket , it is time to replace them. You are not getting full light output from the tube, but the ballast is still drawing the same power as it would for a new tube.

How much energy does an incandescent lightbulb use versus a fluorescent?

Yes that's true fluorescent bulbs are better because it usess 75% less energy and works longer than a incandescent light bulb. Yes...and no. It is true that power usage decreases with fluorescent balb usage. However, one must take into account that they pollute more (i.e. mercury and other heavy metals).

How do you check florescent light ballasts?

The quick way if the bulb is flickering or out, replace if still flickering or out you need a new ballast!

Is it possible to manufacture fluorescent ink?

Yes, fluorescent inks can be manufactured. And they are. To keep it simple, something that is fluorescent will fluoresce under high energy light, usually ultraviolet light. This high energy light will be absorbed by the fluorphore, and it will re-emit light of a lower energy, usually in the visible spectrum where we can see it. (The rest of the light energy of the incoming light will retained as heat - atomic and/or molecular vibration.) Fluorescent markers find application in the security or property control area where they are used to mark things like chairs or tables or stuff like that. The marks are invisible under normal circumstances, but will fluoresce and become visible under black light. Certainly there are still posters that are printed with fluorescent ink and look cool under black light.
