The modern day image of Satan with a tail and horns is an amalgam of several pagan deities but mostly taken from a fictional pagan deity named Baphomet. Baphomet was a made up creation of Christians when they were demonizing the Knights Templar. It was widely reported that the Templars worshipped this creature in an effort to make people hate them.

In the 19th century, Eliphas Levi used the name Baphomet in conjunction with the occult. At the time, most Christians associated "occult" with the worship of Satan. It is images of Baphomet, mostly from the 19th century, that are the main reason for the image of the devil we have today. Look up a picture of Baphomet and you will see the resemblance.

A simpler way of saying this is that the dude with horns is as made-up and inaccurate as the picture of a long-haired Jesus or just about everything we know of Shakespeare.

In reality, the devil is beautiful in appearance. He seems to be everything you want. The Bible describes him as shining with the splendor of many precious gems... He's a sly son-of-a-gun.
