If a driver says someone gets shotgun, he/she means that they get the front passenger seat.
No because the excavator driver said that the hole wasn't safe and when the boss said it is a contradicted the driver the driver lost and legal liability unless he pushed the man into the hole
This is a great question. My instinct says no, only the owner or person given permission to drive can consent, but when both people are in the car it gets complicated. The driver obviously cannot give consent over the owner's objection, but what if the owner is not asked? Hopefully someone can find a good case on this.

Maybe someone has a grudge against you and made a rumor about you. He sounds possesive, untrusting and immature.

I believe that the ambiguity in the Demon Lover by Elizabeth Bowen is at the end where she gets into the cab. Bowen says that the woman looks through the glass separating the driver from the passenger and starts screaming. Now we believe the driver is her lost lover but in reality the driver could have been just one ugly person.
You CAN register a car owned by someone else in some states, but doing so can lead to many problems if the driver gets into trouble and you are registered to the car. Insuring a car you do not own can also lead to problems but many more people do it. (e.g., if your dad is lending you his car and he says that you have to insure it.)
Impossible to answer without a detailed description.
