there are 2 fuel tank straps that need to be removed to drop the tank. if you are accessing the fuel pump it is easier to remove the bed and access it that way.
Remove the straps, disconnect the wiring to fuel guage, and make sure tank is empty and drop the tank.
the fuel pump is located in the gas tank of the truck, they tell you to remove the tank but you can just unbolt the straps and drop it down enough to get to it
To drop the fuel tank on a 1998 GMC Sierra pickup, first, ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove any protective shields and drain the fuel if necessary. Support the tank with a jack or support straps, then disconnect the fuel lines, electrical connectors, and straps holding the tank in place. Carefully lower the tank to the ground, taking care to avoid damaging any components.
Jack up car, block up car, remove tabk straps holding tank, drop tank down, loosen retaing ring at top of tank, pull fuel pump out of tank
You will have to remove the drive shaft, have as little gas in the tank as possible, undo the straps and basically lower the tank so as to disconnect the wires and then drop the tank.

The pump is in the tank, you need to drop the tank by unbolting the two straps holding up the tank. Get a repair manual.
the fuel pump is on the right top side of the fuel tank (if your standing behind the car facing it)..you need to drop the tank and disconnect the fuel lines and sending unit wires to get access to it..the tank has 2 bolts that hold the gas tank straps on. just remove those and slide the tank to the right to clear the fuel filler tube. make sure you have a floor jack with a 2x4 to support the tank as you lower it and before you remove the 2 straps..
It's located in the fuel tank so that would have to be dropped so the drive shaft would have to be removed then the straps that hold the fuel tank can be dropped but try to get as much fuel out before you drop it down.
