If you don't care which color you get, the minimum number falls to 3.
Say you pick the first sock and it's black. If the second one is also black, you're done.
If the second sock is white, then pick a third sock. If the third sock is black, it matches the first sock; if it's white it matches the second one. Either way, you have a pair.
