Almost none. The main aim of whaling in Japan is to limit the number of whales (especially minke whales) that consume large quantities of fish and so reduce fishing yields. Whale meat is sold in high class Tokyo restaurants and very few modern-day Japanese have eaten it.

Why was it so bad for the Japanese when the US stopped trade with them?

The Japanese were devestatingly dependent on trade for strategic resources as the mainland really has very little, these resources were essential for waging war. The Japanese invasion on Manchuria and China were in large part to sequre additional strategic resources. The Japanese had imperialistic aggressive intentions to set up a Japanese empire in Asia and this needs oil. When the united states stopped trading oil with the Japanese in their mind they had no choice but to effectively immediately open hostilities to seize oil fields in Indonesia along with various other resources. In short the Japanese needed resources for their economy to function, when the US stopped trading with them their economy could not survive due to shortage in strategic resources like steel and oil
