The second passage above addresses the question of an existing marriage where one partner or the other becomes a Christian after marriage. It does not at all address the question of marrying someone who one knows is not a Christian. The two are totally different issues. The former is talking about something that happens after marriage the other before.
Scripture clearly forbids a Christian person to marry someone who is not. In the case mentioned in the question the outcome was a good one, but it is never possible to know if this will happen or not. Many more cases abound where it has not, causing untold grief.
