Doxycycline is in the tetracycline family and is unrelated to penicillin. It is most likely fine for you to take. If you develop a rash, swelling lips, tongue, wheezing or closing of your airways, get to the ER immediately. These are signs of an allergic reaction to doxycycline.

No. Amoxicillin is a type of penicillin. No penicillin-based antibiotics can be taken if you are truly allergic to penicillin. Be sure to ask your doctor or nurse practitioner if the medication they have prescribed is a type of penicillin.

Note: Many people who have been diagnosed with penicillin allergy are not truly allergic. With some types of viral illnesses (esp. mononucleosis), amoxicillin will cause a non-allergic type rash. Also, some children have been treated with amoxicillin coincidentally while they have a viral illness which ends with a rash - making the situation difficult to sort out. If you develop hives or swollen eyes or mouth, you have a true penicillin allergy of the potentially dangerous type.

A penicillin allergy does not mean you cannot take vancomycin as vanc does not contain penicillin. However, this does not mean you will not be allergic to vancomycin.
