It is correct to ask for the information that you want to know. You could ask a married lady, "What was your maiden name? You look like a cousin of mine and I wonder if there is any connection." You may think she looks like someone you knew. Other wise you would not ask that question. My name is still the same name it was 2 hours ago. It has not changed. Ask me what it is. You may say, "I did not understand your name when we were introduced, please tell me (again) what it is." Be forthright with the information you want.
